KOTA KINABALU: A motorcyclist and a pillion rider were killed when the bike they were on collided with a lorry in the Telupid district.

The two men, identified only as Mailven and Mirus, died on the spot at Kg Wonod along the Telupid-Ranau at around midnight on Monday (June 21).

Beluran district police chief Supt Kasim Muda said on Tuesday (June 22) that initial investigations found that the motorcyclist was coming out of a junction when they were hit by a lorry heading towards Telupid.

The lorry skidded and landed on its side after the crash.

He said the 38-year-old lorry driver, who was unhurt, immediately lodged a report at the Telupid police station.

The lorry driver has been taken to the Beluran district headquarters to assist investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, he said.

In an unrelated incident, firemen recovered the body of an 11-year-old boy from the Inanam River in Kota Kinabalu at 6.25am on Tuesday.

The body of the boy, identified as Almunel Unim, was found under a bridge along the river at 6.25am.

It was learned that he had gone to the river for a swim with some friends around noon on Monday.

A distress call was made to the Fire and Rescue Department at 9.05pm.

However, firemen called off the search and rescue due to the fading light and returned to the scene at 6am Tuesday. The body was found 25 minutes later.
