A dog walker who was fatally attacked while walking eight hounds in Surrey was mauled to death by her own pitbull.

Natasha Johnston, 28, suffered horrifying wounds from “multiple penetrating bites” in the devastating attack near Caterham in January 2023.

This comes after an American Bully XL was reported as being responsible for the death and was destroyed following an investigation.

Dr Alison Robson, a veterinary surgeon, examined Natasha’s cause of death and found that the tragedy was actually brought about by a pitbull.

Natasha was reported to have rescued her pitbull Stan from owners who were planning to have him put down after he bit one of their kids.

The canine also bit Natasha twice in the days leading up to her death.

A friend of Natasha’s, Delia Lewis, whose own pooch was in the pack when her pal lost her life, told the Daily Mail: “She felt Stan hadn't been trained and with the correct care and affection he'd be fine. Her boyfriend said it wasn't a good idea and, having seen how troublesome Stan could be, my response was, 'Are you sure?'”

She added: “But she loved dogs with a passion and she was still grieving for her black staffy, Missy, who had recently died, so she didn't take our advice.”

In the context of Stan’s violent past, expert Dr Robson claimed it was “foolish” to walk him in the company of other dogs, especially given he was not wearing a muzzle and was off the lead.

Surrey Police said in a statement following the death: "As part of our investigation an expert veterinary report was obtained, which was then shared with the Surrey Coroner.

As a result of this, two dogs (both Dachshunds) were returned to their owner at the end of April and one dog, which belonged to the deceased, has been put to sleep."

The dog that was put down was an American Bully XL, not Stan the pitbull.

This comes as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has vowed to ban American Bully XLs following a spate of deadly attacks.
