Angela Rayner has confirmed that she took thousands of pounds worth of free clothing from Lord Alli, the Labour peer at the heart of the donations scandal.

The Deputy Prime Minister declared in her register of interests that she accepted £3,550 worth of work clothes in mid-June.

She had previously said that the donation was accepted for “parliamentary duties”, but corrected the record after seeking advice from the authorities.

It is the first time she has recorded accepting clothes from the Labour peer in the register of interests.

Ms Rayner came under fire in September over her use of Lord Alli’s $2.5 million New York apartment for a holiday with Sam Tarry, a former Labour MP, at the beginning of this year.

She had declared to the parliamentary authorities the donation from Lord Alli that saw her use his apartment but did not detail publicly that Mr Tarry had also stayed there.

Labour became engulfed in a row in September over donations and gifts to Lord Alli, who was previously given a pass to No 10 despite having no official government role.

The peer, who is worth £200 million, has also given Sir Keir Starmer tens of thousands of pounds to spend on suits and glasses, while Lady Starmer has also been given £5,000 worth of clothes and personal shopping.

Ms Rayner also accepted £2,230 of clothing from British clothing brand ME and EM in the same month as the provision of clothing for her from Lord Alli.

In her updated register of interests, the donation from the Labour peer is recorded as being accepted on June 15 for “work clothes for use while undertaking my duties”.

In the previous version from earlier in October, the donation was put down as “donation in kind for undertaking parliamentary duties”.

The original donation was declared within the correct time limit.

Ms Rayner, along with Sir Keir and Rachel Reeves, all promised to no longer accept donations of clothing following the backlash.

The Prime Minister accepted significantly more in clothing from Lord Alli than Ms Rayner, taking £32,000 worth, including £2,400 for glasses.

He also made use of an £18 million London penthouse during the general election campaign, which he said was necessary while his son was studying for his GCSEs, and on other occasions.

Sir Keir also had to amend his register of interests with regards to clothing donations from the Labour peer, as they had previously been described as being “for the private office of the Leader of the Opposition”.

It is understood that Sir Keir sought advice from the registrar of MPs’ interests over the two donations, and they were re-categorised as “donations in kind” of clothing. The original donations were declared on time.

Last week, it emerged that Lord Alli committed four minor breaches in his register of interests, following an investigation by the Lords standards commissioner.

The breaches were not connected to the donations accepted by members of the Labour frontbench, for which there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing.
