KLANG: Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel will inspect 77 bus terminals and depots before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
JPJ senior enforcement director Datuk Lokman Jamaan said the inspections were to check on the roadworthiness of express buses.
He added that they had already inspected at least half the terminals and depots on the list and would inspect the remaining ones over the next few days.
"Plainclothes personnel would be on duty through the Hari Raya Aidilfitri operations from April 29 to May 8.
"They will board buses at random nationwide and monitor the drivers on the journey.
"They will be looking at the drivers to ensure they are not tired, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and follow traffic regulations," he told reporters at the Sani Bus Terminal here on Monday (April 25).
He said express bus drivers were responsible for the lives of hundreds of people each day, which was the main reason JPJ was monitoring them.
"We will also have undercover officers monitoring ticket sales to ensure that no one takes advantage of the situation to raise fares.
"We have frozen the leave of over 2,200 enforcement personnel nationwide during this period including 300 in Selangor," he said.
JPJ had also identified a number of hotspots nationwide where its personnel would be deployed to curb traffic accidents.
He said it was projected that there would be more than 14 million vehicles on the road from April 29 to May 8.
"At least two million vehicles are expected to be on the road at any time each day during this period.
"We urge road users to follow the traffic regulations and be courteous and responsible," he said.
Lokman also said road users should take note that anyone caught cutting the queue, speeding, using a mobile phone while driving or riding, beating the red light and misusing the emergency lane would be taken to court.
"We will not be issuing compounds for these five traffic violations," he said.
