Russian troops have planted mines around a key Ukrainian nuclear power plant, according to the international atomic agency.

The watchdog said the Russian Army had reinstalled mines along the perimeter of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in occupied Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi of the IAEA expressed concern over this development, emphasising that the presence of mines contradicts IAEA safety standards.

It comes as Washington urged Kyiv to adopt a “more conservative” approach to Russia’s invasion rather than launch a new ground offensive to regain territory

A Western official working on Ukraine policy told the Financial Times that there is “little prospect of an operational breakthrough by either side in 2024”, let alone in the next few months, and said a strategy of “active defence” would allow Ukraine to “build out its forces” this year and prepare for 2025.

According to the paper, this aligns with the strategy that the US is reportedly selling to Ukraine, with Joe Biden’s administration said to be pushing Kyiv to focus on holding its territory, entrenching positions and beefing up supplies and forces over the coming months.

Boris Johnson has said a second Donald Trump presidency could be a “big win for the world” and “just what the world needs” as he backed the Republican party favourite.

The former PM mocked the “caterwauling orgy” of concern in Britain about the prospect of Mr Trump winning November’s US presidential contest.

Mr Johnson said his old ally was not a “would-be dictator”, despite his role in inciting a riot which saw the unprecedented attack on the US Capitol building.

2 hours ago Germany warns Putin could launch attack on Nato in less than a decade

Vladimir Putin could launch an attack on Nato in the next five to eight years, Germany’s defence minister has said – with one top officer within the alliance even calling on nations to be ready for an all-out war with Moscow within two decades.

With the Russian president’s rhetoric towards Nato nations becoming increasingly hostile, conflict could come at any time.

“We hear threats from the Kremlin almost every day ... so we have to take into account that Vladimir Putin might even attack a Nato country one day,” Boris Pistorius said.

The Ukrainian president made the comments during an interview with Channel 4 News which aired on Friday night (19 January).

“Please, Donald Trump, I invite you to Ukraine, to Kyiv. So, if you can stop the war during 24 hours I think it will be enough to come,” he said.

“Maybe Donald Trump has a real idea and he can share it with me.”

Four tanks at an oil depot in western Russia caught fire on Friday following a cross-border Ukrainian drone strike, officials said, forcing residents in the area to evacuate.

The inferno at the facility controlled by oil major Rosneft was spread over an area of 1,000 square metres along with tanks in Klintsy, Bryansk Region, Tass news agency said.

Bryansk governor Alexander Bogomaz said that a Ukrainian “aeroplane-style drone” was brought down and fire erupted after the munitions dropped over the oil depot.

5 hours ago Zelensky worried about ‘very dangerous’ Trump rhetoric

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said he is worried by the prospect of Donald Trump returning to the White House – branding the former US leader’s claim that he could stop Ukraine’s war with Russia in 24 hours “very dangerous”.

In an interview with Channel 4 News on Friday, Mr Zelensky invited the former president and front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination to visit Kyiv, saying: “If you can stop the war during 24 hours, I think it will be enough to come.”

Mr Zelensky described the former president’s rhetoric as “very dangerous”, and appeared to be apprehensive over the possibility that Mr Trump’s idea of a negotiated solution might involve Ukraine making major concessions to Russia.

“[Mr Trump] is going to make decisions on his own, without ... I’m not even talking about Russia, but without both sides, without us,” Mr Zelensky said. “If he says this publicly, that’s a little scary. I’ve seen a lot, a lot of victims, but that’s really making me a bit stressed.”

He added: “Because even if his idea – that no-one has heard yet – doesn’t work for us, for our people, he will do anything to implement his idea anyway. And this worries me a little.”

6 hours ago Soldier’s wife appeals outside Putin’s campaign HQ for her husband to be brought home from Ukraine

The wife of a Russian soldier delivered an emotional appeal for his return from Ukraine on Saturday at the election headquarters of Vladimir Putin, a defiant gesture in a country where open criticism of the war is banned.

“Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has issued a decree that my husband has to be there [in Ukraine]. I’m interested to know when he will issue a decree that my husband has to be home,” Maria Andreyeva said, as campaign workers looked on.

She became involved in a heated exchange with a woman who told her that Russian soldiers in Ukraine were defending the motherland and she should pray for them. “So what’s next? The Ministry of Defense has spent its money, now we need to squeeze everything out of our guys, get the last life out of them? So that they come back to us just as stumps?” Andreyeva demanded.

“Will they give me the stump? What will I get back? A man without legs, without arms, a sick man? Don’t you know what’s happening there?”

The exchange took place during a visit to Mr Putin’s election base by a small delegation from “The Way Home”, an organisation of soldiers’ wives that is campaigning for their return from the front.

She told reporters her toddler daughter was suffering from arrested speech development because of her father’s absence, saying: “All my family’s problems can only be solved by one thing – by my husband being demobilised. Because she is a completely different child when her father comes home.”

7 hours ago Russia failing in attempts to dislodge Ukraine from left bank of Dnipro River, says UK

Dislodging Ukraine’s foothold on the left bank of the Dnipro River is a priority for Russia, whose forces are failing to do so and suffering mounting losses – despite significantly outnumbering Kyiv’s troops in the area, Britain’s Ministry of Defence has claimed.

The ministry said: “Ukraine maintains a presence on the left bank of the Dnipro River and has continued to repel Russian attacks despite logistical concerns. On 16 January 2024, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Southern Defence Forces remarked that logistical supply on the left bank of the Dnipro had faced difficulties.

“Russia’s Dnipr Grouping of Forces has been unsuccessful in all its attempts to dislodge the Ukrainian defenders, despite almost certainly having a significant advantage in the balance of forces on this axis. It is highly likely that the poor training and coordination of Russian forces in the area is limiting their offensive capabilities.

“Forcing Ukraine to withdraw its forces from the left bank of he Dnipro remains a priority operational objective for Russia. It is highly likely Russia will persist with attacks in the Krynky area in the coming weeks despite growing personal losses.”

7 hours ago Labour warns Europe risks ‘taking eye off the ball’ on Russia

Labour has signalled it will continue the current government’s strong support for Ukraine if it wins power in the upcoming UK general election, with its shadow foreign secretary warning the rest of Europe against complacency.

In a speech on Saturday, David Lammy was set to reiterate Labour’s desire for a new British-EU security pact, and say that if Labour came to power, he would visit Kyiv in the first 100 days in office “to demonstrate Labour’s long-term commitment to stop Vladimir Putin and begin work on a pathway towards Ukraine’s Nato membership.”

“We in Europe risk taking our eye off the ball,” Lammy will say, according to extracts of the speech, which added he would label Putin a “ringleader of a new form of fascism”.
