Reports by MARTIN CARVALHO, FATIMAH ZAINAL and ASHLEY TANG
MALAYSIAN Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki is still being investigated by the police over his recent share-trading controversy.
The Home Ministry said police were still investigating the issue related to a Dang Wangi report dated Jan 6, opened under a police enquiry paper.
“So far, the investigation is still ongoing. In this regard, the ministry does not intend to comment further on this case so as not to interfere with the ongoing investigation,” the ministry said in a written reply in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
It was responding to a question from Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor) on whether the investigation against Azam was still ongoing even though the Securities Commission (SC) had concluded there was no wrongdoing and had closed its own investigation.
On Jan 18, the SC said that it was not able to conclusively establish that a breach under Section 25(4) of the Securities Central Depository Act 1991 had occurred.
Previously, allegations had surfaced that Azam owned a substantial number of shares in two companies between 2015 and 2016 when he was the MACC director of investigations.
Azam has maintained that he did not commit any wrongdoing nor was there a conflict of interest.
He said his trading account was used by his brother for his shares trading, adding that the shares were bought in the open market and were financed by his brother.
