KOTA KINABALU: Police are investigating the Lahad Datu district police chief for negligence in the accidental death of his 14-year-old daughter, says Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jauteh Jikun.

He said the investigation was being conducted on the district police chief because he was the owner of the gun.

However, Comm Jauteh said the case was still under investigation as the police were not able to draw any conclusion if the police officer was negligent in ensuring his gun was safely stored.

“We have yet to conclude as to whether the case was related to negligence or otherwise until there is a full report on the results of the investigation,” Comm Jauteh said yesterday.

For a question on whether the district police chief would be suspended during the ongoing investigations, Comm Jauteh said no decision was made yet.

On April 16, the daughter of Lahad Datu police chief Asst Comm Dzulbaharin Ismail was found dead at their home in Taman Tabanak.

She is believed to have died from a single gunshot wound fired from her father’s service pistol.

Comm Jauteh previously said that initial investigations indicated that the pistol was secured in a locked cupboard in the house.
