No injuries were reported after the incident at the store in the 900 block of I Street NW, police said. The private guard was deployed by the store, police said. Some guards are licensed to carry guns.
Police said they are investigating.
During the incident, two of the thieves held open a door at the store near Mount Vernon Square so that four others could enter, police said. One of the thieves brought and discharged a fire extinguisher in the store.
The device was used as a distraction, police said.
