In a major boost to the housing sector, the Centre has announced over 300,000 new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-Gramin) in Chhattisgarh.

According to state government officials, Chhattisgarh will get 303,384 new houses under the scheme.

For now, around 847,000 houses have already been sanctioned in Chhattisgarh so far.

The officials said the central government had set new eligibility criteria to make the scheme more inclusive, in which the maximum income limit has now been increased to Rs 15,000.

Apart from this, those who have two and a half acres of irrigated land or five acres of non-irrigated land will also be eligible under this scheme, they said. Beneficiaries can now apply and survey for their housing themselves.

The announcement of new houses will give a big support to the housing sector in the state. It will improve rural infrastructure and living conditions of the people in rural areas, the officials added.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the state government was giving top priority to building ‘pakka’ houses for the people living below the poverty line.

“We held a Cabinet meeting the very next day after taking oath (in December 2023) and approved 1.8 million houses. Today, due to this decision, millions of beneficiaries are smiling,” Sai said.

He said the state government was constantly monitoring the work on PMAY so that it could be executed quickly.

GIS mapping and accurate planning are being prepared through the Griha portal.

“We have entrusted the responsibility of supplying construction material for PMAY to self-help groups under the Lakhpati Didi programme,” Sai said.

Sai added the proposal, which was first approved by the Centre, would enable construction of 15,000 houses under the PMAY-G scheme in the state’s restive areas like the Left-wing extremist (LWE) regions.
