KUWAIT CITY, Sept 16: The parliamentary Environment Affairs Committee discussed Thursday the rising pollution levels at Kuwait Bay and other coastal areas. Committee Chairman MP Hamad Al-Matar disclosed that a new source of pollution is discovered every day, indicating many manholes allocated for collecting rainwater are being used for the disposal of drainage water and chemical substances. He said the Council of Ministers has not responded to the recommendation of the Environment Public Authority (EPA) to prohibit swimming at Fahaheel and Shuwaikh beaches due to the rising pollution levels in these areas.

He wondered why the government has not taken action; thereby, endangering the lives of citizens and expatriates who continue to swim in polluted water. He pointed out that since the issue concerns many ministries and institutions, the committee will invite His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid and the concerned ministers including Minister of Finance and Minister of State for Economic and Investment Affairs Khalifa Hamada to a meeting scheduled for Sept 29; considering the need to allocate a budget for cleaning Kuwait Bay and other coastal areas.
