A Conservative Party member recently shared their near-defection to Reform UK, pointing to one Tory MP's potential to reclaim disenchanted voters.

"As a Conservative Party member who so nearly voted for Reform UK, so much so as to put the X in the RMF box before scribbling out, I know @pritipatel can win back those millions of voters that left us", a voter shared in a tweet on X.

"She can win back the trust of those who stayed at home. MPs should rally behind Priti so we can get on with the job of holding Labour to account."

Priti Patel, who served as Home Secretary from 2019 to 2022 and has been the MP for Witham since 2010, is known for her robust, right-wing views and Thatcherite ideology.

Her tenure in various governmental roles has seen both significant achievements. Notably, she launched a points-based immigration system and played a crucial role in the Vote Leave campaign during the Brexit referendum.

In Parliament, Patel has taken several contentious stances. In 2013, she voted against same-sex marriage in England and Wales.

Additionally, she has been a supporter of the death penalty, claiming in a 2011 BBC Question Time appearance that it would deter crime, although she retracted this position in 2016.

Throughout her career, Ms Patel has maintained hardline positions on immigration, voting for stricter policies and supporting measures that led to the wrongful targeting of the Windrush generation.

Despite her controversial stances and the political turbulence surrounding her, many within the Conservative Party see Patel as a unifying figure capable of restoring trust and energizing the base.

Her announcement of running in the leadership race was supported by many, including former health minister Saqib Bhatti, who said: "I’m backing Priti because I think she’s the best candidate we’ve got to unify the party, to help us learn the lessons of the latest election, take the fight to Keir Starmer and make us a viable proposition in five years’ time."

Since its most devastating election defeat to date, the Conservative Party has been torn by an intense and, at times, acrimonious leadership contest.

This leadership battle is crucial for the Conservative Party as it seeks to rebuild and unify after the catastrophic election loss. The outcome will significantly impact the party's direction and its ability to present a united front against the new Labour Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.
