'Pragmatic' Queen heeded doctors' advice to avoid 'overshadowing' COP26 goal

A royal expert has said that the Queen would have been "very careful" in making the decision to cancel her trip to Glasgow for the COP26 summit, due to her reluctance to draw attention from the conversations between world leaders. Ian Lloyd told Express.co.uk that Her Majesty believes in the "value of this conference" and would have realised that had she attended and fallen ill, she "would be the story" and would detract focus from the ongoing climate crisis debates.

Mr Lloyd, a royal photographer, and biographer told Express.co.uk: "It was done on doctors advice and the final decision would be taken by the Queen herself.

"She's a very practical and pragmatic person and I think she would realise that if she were to attend and for some reason not feel very well and have to curtail the visit or maybe not go ahead with it at the last minute, that would be the story and that could overshadow the proceedings.

"That's something she definitely wouldn't want because I think she and Prince Charles and Prince William believe very much in the value of this conference and I think she'll be gutted that she's not able to be present.

"I think at the same time, she's very careful to take the right advice."

The 95-year-old monarch announced on October 25 that she had "regretfully" decided to cancel her trip, following advice from her medical team.

Her Majesty had been expected to travel to Glasgow for the opening of COP26 and was due to host a diplomatic reception on the evening of November 1.

Representatives from 197 countries are due to arrive in Scotland for the two-week summit, with 120 world leaders expected to attend for the first few days.

Discussions will revolve around the global response to climate change, with countries negotiating various deals to holding world temperature rises to “well below” 2C and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "Following advice to rest, the Queen has been undertaking light duties at Windsor Castle.
