More than 50% of airline passengers surveyed in the Asia-Pacific region are confident to take to the skies within the next six months even though their are highly cautious of the pandemic.

About 58% felt that pre-flight Covid-19 testing was the most important factor that would improve their air travel confidence when asked to identify the most effective personal safety measure.

These were the findings of the global Passenger Confidence Tracker 2021 survey conducted by Inmarsat.

The Covid-19 pandemic has thrown the global aviation industry into the doldrums. But as vaccination plans progress across the globe, interest in air travel is gradually picking up, although it will take a long time before it can reach pre-pandemic levels.

Air passengers demand greater predictability and consistency for them to be confident to fly again.

About 63% of those surveyed want a consistent worldwide set of safety standards, and 62% want all airlines to follow the same hygiene practices.

Half of them believe that reputation is a more significant factor when choosing an airline today compared with before the pandemic, according to the report.

The top three barriers among Asia-Pacific passengers are catching a virus abroad (60%), quarantining (53%) and unpredictable border closures (40%).

More than 90% in the region agreed that the pandemic had changed their long-term travel habits. A total of 44% of the respondents expected to travel less by any means and 36% would travel to less far away destinations.

A total of 10,000 airline passengers globally were surveyed, of which 4,500 were from the Asia-Pacific region.
