Alleged hitman arrested following Russian commander assassination

One Russian man was brutally beaten to death when a mass brawl erupted at a military training camp near Moscow. The huge fight in the military barracks was captured on camera and shared widely on Telegram this week. The shocking video is the latest sign of chaos growing in Russian President Vladimir Putin's military.

The men were about to be sent to the frontlines, according to Russian media.

The fight took place in the village of Kalininets, near Moscow, after a contract soldier left the barracks without authorisation and walked to a nearby store.

Upon the soldier's return, a group of senior military police officers decided he had "violated the statute".

A reconnaissance unit and military police were then tasked with beating the contractor as a way to make an example out of him.

The man's colleagues, who accuse the senior officers of being intoxicated, joined in the brawl as they tried to fight off the officers.

Some soldiers drew knives during the skirmish, with several soldiers left seriously wounded from the Russian-on-Russian fight.

A man was later declared dead in hospital later that day.

It is unclear whether this was the same man who left the base without permission.

The incident was reported to the Russian military prosecutor's office, but the Russian Ministry of Defense has yet to comment on the footage.

This comes as a Russian general was dismissed as a military commander for exposing the dire situation for Russian soldiers on the Ukrainian frontline.

Major General Ivan Popov, who commanded the 58th Combined Arms Army, said in a voice message published by Russian lawmaker Andrei Gurulyov that he had been dismissed after telling "the truth" to the top military brass.

He said: "The Ukrainian army could not break through our ranks at the front but our senior chief hit us from the rear, viciously beheading the army at the most difficult and intense moment."

General Popov claimed he faced a choice "to keep quiet and be a coward or to say it the way it is".

He added: "Due to this, the seniors likely felt some danger in me and instantly, in one day, put together an order to the Minister of Defence and got rid of me."

During the voice message, General Popov highlighted the deaths of Russian soldiers from Ukrainian artillery and said the army lacked proper counter-artillery systems and reconnaissance of enemy artillery.

The statements come amid mounting uncertainty within the Russian military.

On Wednesday, a senior Russian official said Sergei Surovikin, a top general who has not been seen in public since the Wagner mutiny, was "resting".
