Kay Burley takes over MNF studio for Election Night

General election night coverage will get a blockbuster top-of-the-table football clash treatment from Sky News, the broadcaster promised. The output on July 4 will be the biggest and most expensive ever staged for a nationwide poll.

Anchor Kay Burley, 63, will host Election Night Live, a special overnight results programme, from a 360-degree immersive studio normally used by Sky Sports’ shows like Monday Night Football.

It will be TV veteran’s 12th UK General Election - a broadcasting record.

The broadcaster was first out of the traps to announce details of its wall-to-wall coverage, with political editor Beth Rigby, Sunday show presenter Sir Trevor Phillips, and data and economics editor Ed Conway also on duty throughout the night.

Expert political analysis will come in the shape of Greater Manchester Mayor and former Labour MP Andy Burnham and Baroness Ruth Davidson, former MSP and Leader of the Scottish Conservatives.

Academic Michael Thrasher, professor of politics at the University of Plymouth, will lead the channel’s psephology team.

From 7am the following day Sophy Ridge, host of Sky’s Politics Hub, will be live from Westminster as the election result is absorbed and plans for the next government are made.

The broadcaster, which popularised flashy gadgetry and live punditry to enormous success particularly during major sporting events, has promised more of the same as the country goes to the polls.

David Rhodes, Sky News executive chairman, said: “We saw a tremendous response to our coverage of this month’s local elections—and we’ll have much, much more to offer at this UK General Election, with the most experienced team, plus the most comprehensive data and analysis, presented online and on TV from the most state-of-the-art studio in the country. Our political team is the best in the business—Kay, Sophy, Beth, Trevor, Ed, Sam, and more are ready to bring audiences the full story, first.”

Sky will go head-to-head with the BBC, ITV, GB News and Channel 4 for the historic summer election in six weeks.

Laura Kuenssberg presented the BBC’s coverage of the May 2 local and mayoral elections and she is expected to assume the role for the general election after disgraced presenter Huw Edwards quit the corporation last month.

Edwards, 62, was due to take over from veteran David Dimbleby, 85, but he resigned on “medical advice”, meaning Ms Kuenssberg, 47, and Clive Myrie, 59, are favourites to assume blue riband presenting duties.

Wigan-born Ms Burley said: “This will be my 12th UK general election. I'm as committed to top rate, fast, accurate coverage in 2024 as I was when Margaret Thatcher became PM in 1979.”

Ms Davidson, 45, said "Every election night is made up of a number of different stories. What happens in Scotland is undoubtedly going to be one of them. Over a decade on the political front line north of the border means I'll be able to analyse and interpret the results as they come in for viewers right across the UK."
