Michael Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and one of the world's richest people, ended his presidential campaign on Wednesday, March 4.

Bloomberg announced his late-entry presidential bid in November and spent hundreds of millions of his own dollars to fund it.

But he had a disappointing debut on Super Tuesday, winning only American Samoa. He didn't compete in the four voting contests because of his late entry.

Bloomberg said he got into the race to defeat Donald Trump and was "leaving for the same reason."

"I've always believed that defeating Donald Trump starts with uniting behind the candidate with the best shot to do it. After yesterday's vote, it is clear that candidate is my friend and a great American, Joe Biden," he wrote in a press release.

Bloomberg made his fortune through his financial information business. He turned to politics in 2001 and served as New York's mayor from 2002-2013. He started as a Republican but switched to independent during his second term. In 2018, he re-registered as a Democrat.
