An earlier version of this article incorrectly said that James William Nugent II is a special-education teacher. The article has been corrected.
A teacher at a Fairfax County, Va., elementary school has been charged with distributing child pornography and exposing himself to a preteen girl on the street, police said Wednesday.
James William Nugent II, 27, who works at Groveton Elementary School in the county’s Alexandria area, was charged with 13 counts of distributing child pornography and one count of taking indecent liberties with a child, according to police. Online court records show he is being held in the Fairfax County jail.

Peter Greenspun, who is listed in court records at Nugent’s attorney, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Police said Nugent is a “resource teacher” at Groveton, meaning one who works with small groups of students who have special needs. Fairfax schools spokeswoman Julie Moult said Nugent has been suspended from his job.

At 1:30 p.m. Saturday, police said, they spoke with a girl at Camden Street and Wittington Boulevard, in the Stratford Landing neighborhood, who said she had been approached by a man in a Toyota Sienna. The girl said the man lured her into his van and exposed himself, police said. They said the girl, who was not physically harmed, ran away.
Residents gave officers their surveillance footage of the van, police said, and a nearby license plate reader led detectives to Nugent. Police said they searched his home Wednesday and arrested him after finding child pornography.
Authorities urged anyone with information about Nugent to contact them at 703-246-7800.
