Princess Alexandra turns 85 today: Who is the Princess and where is she now?

       Princess Alexandra of Kent is Queen Elizabeth II's cousin and the daughter of Prince George, Duke of Kent. On Christmas Day the princess celebrates her 85th birthday.

       Princess Alexandra is a working member of the Royal Family, who is patrol or president of more than 100 organisations ranging from arts to health care.

       She also, on occasion, supports the Queen in her duties as Head of State.

       This included attending certain ceremonial events alongside other members of the Royal Family.

       Princess Alexandra is the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.

       She is the daughter of Prince George, Duke of Kent, the fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary.

       Her mother was Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark.

       Princess Alexandra was named after her paternal great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra.

       Her full name is Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel.

       Christabel was included in her name because she was born on Christmas Day.

       The Princess' name also pays homage to both of her maternal aunts, Countess Elizabeth of T?rring-Jettenbach and Princess Olga of Yugoslavia.

       She was baptised in the Private Chapel of Buckingham Palace, in 1937, and her godparents were King George VI and the Queen Mother.

       Her father was King George VI's brother.

       She spent most of her young life at her family's country house, Coppins, in Buckinghamshire.

       She became the first British princess to attend a boarding school, Heathfield School near Ascot, before later studying in Paris.

       Princess Alexandra also trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

       Princess Alexandra still helps the Queen out by assisting in some duties on her behalf.

       Most often, this includes attending gatherings or events on behalf of the Royal Family.

       According to Royal.uk: "Mental health care, palliative care and international aid remain close to the Princess’s heart.

       "She is Joint-President of Cancer Research UK with The Duke of Gloucester and was Patron of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust for 47 years.

       "She has been Patron of the Florence Nightingale Foundation - which provides scholarships for nurses, midwives and health visitors to study - since 1957 and is also Patron of St Christopher's Hospice, Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service, MIND and the Mental Health Foundation."

       Princess Alexandra is also known for her work with the blind and those with Alzheimer's.

       Royal.uk adds: "Princess Alexandra has a great interest in classical music and opera."She is Patron of the Chopin Society, the English National Opera, and the London Philharmonic Choir."Her Royal Highness regularly attends galas and performances to lend her support to events."

       Princess Alexandra lives at Thatched House Lodge in Richmond, London, a Crown property purchased on a 150-year lease from the Crown Estate Commissioners by Sir Angus Ogilvy after their wedding in 1963.

       She also has use of a grace-and-favour apartment at St James's Palace in London.
