John Thorlby-Coy, 50, will appear at court on Wednesday to face nine charges of indecent assault
But he will appear at court on Wednesday to face nine charges of indecent assault, one of attempted rape and one of gross indecency. The alleged offences all involve girls, with at least one under the age of 14.
The Sun understands Thorlby-Coy was suspended as head of function — an operations role — at HMP Ranby, near Retford, Notts, following his arrest last year.
He appeared at Nottingham magistrates court on December 8 and the case was sent straight to the city’s crown court because of its seriousness.
Thorlby-Coy is understood to firmly deny all the charges
A source said: “The case has rocked the prison. Thorlby-Coy has a big job, just under deputy governor level. He was known as ‘TC’ and had a lot of respect.”
Ranby holds about 1,000 male cons.
A 2018 inspectors’ report noted: “HMP Ranby had proven to be a difficult prison to run and still had many problems to fix.
"The key priority remained undoubtedly the continuing battle against drugs, which undermined everything. But that was not the whole picture.
“The prison was well led by a competent and effective governor, supported by a capable senior team and staff.”
