LABOUR MPs have condemned the use of private jets – just weeks after their leader Sir Keir Starmer flew privately to watch England play in the Euros final.
They are now demanding a tax hike on private flights, which they say would raise ￡700million a year.
A House of Commons motion, signed by five Labour MPs, stated: “Private jets release 10 times more carbon per passenger than commercial flights”. And the MPs said: “The UK has more private flights and more pollution from private jets than any other country in Europe”.

The Labour PM flew from London Stansted to Berlin in an Airbus A-321M to watch England lose to Spain last month, returning the same day. He also used a private jet to fly from Wales to Scotland as Leader of the Opposition during the General Election campaign.
Critics have accused him of hypocrisy because he previously attacked former Tory PM Rishi Sunak for flying privately,
taunting Mr Sunak in January: “The view on the ground is very different to that from his private jet”.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner also accused Mr Sunak of “jetting around the country on taxpayers’ money like an A-list celeb”.
Questioned about Sir Keir’s flight, a Number 10 spokesperson said: “The Government is committed to always delivering value for money for taxpayers. Decisions on travel are always taken with that in mind in relation to ministerial time and delivering value for money.”

Others who have come under fire for using private jets include Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who used an Airbus to travel to New Delhi.
Prince Harry was criticised after enjoying luxury flights while in Canada in February.
In 2019 he founded Travalyst, which aims to help people make “more informed travel choices” to protect the environment.
US singer Taylor Swift also flew into Stansted on a private jet in June ahead of a series of concerts across the UK.

Labour MPs signing the motion include former Shadow Cabinet members Andy McDonald and Jon Trickett. It was also signed by former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, who was elected as a Labour MP last month but now sits as an independent.
They called on the Government “to tackle this issue by levying VAT, tax fuel and increase air passenger duty on private jets which would raise ￡700 million a year”.
