'Hate democracy' BBC Question Time sends Rejoiners into fury with rare pro-Brexit audience

On Twitter, Remainers questioned how the BBC had selected the audience for Thursday’s debate in Nottingham, accusing it of right-wing bias. However, Brexiteer MP Andrew Bridgen rubbished these claims, telling the Express: “The fact is all the BBC audiences should be pro-Brexit as it was and is the sentiment of the British public and license fee payers.”

He added that Remainers “don’t like democracy, so why would they like balance?”

BBC Question Time has in the past been accused of having many pro-remain audiences.

Commenting on the Express website, ThumperSmith said: “There would seem to be many a Remainer with very short memories.

“It wasn't so long ago when the leavers were complaining that BBC bias was loading the audience and the panel with mostly anti-Brexit supporters.”

Meanwhile, JL3 wrote: “Funny how the Remainers don’t like it when they think the audience is Brexiteers but kept quiet when the audience went in their favour for years.”

Jaymo said: “To suggest the BBC are pro-Brexit is absolute nonsense, just look at the audiences over the last 5 years – massively anti-Brexit.”

Razorage wrote: “don't the sad Remainers squeal when they feel subjected to the kind of media coverage that the majority who voted for Brexit have been subjected to several years.”

There were also claims of bias with the panel, which featured only one prominent Brexiteer – Penny Mordaunt.

Labour MP Alison McGovern clashed with former Number 10 adviser Samuel Kasumu after she said that the current spat with the EU over the Northern Ireland Protocol made her “cynical” about some of the promises made by the Government.

Mr Kasumu responded: “To be fair when Boris Johnson and David Frost were trying to negotiate a deal, you were too busy trying to go against the will of the people and campaigning for a second referendum.”

Ms McGovern said that she had been trying to “bring people together” and “to find a way forward”.

“What I tried to do throughout the whole process was to find compromises.”

The UK left the EU after Boris Johnson was able to strike a deal last December with the economic bloc.

Ms McGovern has often voted against pro-Brexit bills in Parliament.

Also on the panel was Professor Robert Winston, a Labour peer. He warned of the consequences of going back on the Protocol.

Lord Winston said: “I do think if you sign a document like this – it’s a contract; you can't negate that afterwards.”

Mr Bridgen noted: “I can’t remember the last time there was a majority of people who voted to leave on the panel on Question Time.”

A BBC spokesperson said: “Question Time always selects its audiences to reflect recent voting trends and the current political picture of the nation it is broadcasting from. Those trends differ across the UK and we aim to reflect those differences.”
