Speaking to the Conservative Party conference on Tuesday the Home Secretary made a passionate argument for the ending of free movement. Ms Patel went on to praise the possibilities that lie ahead for Britain post-Brexit from science to academia but despite the high praise, she stressed more needs to be done to tackle immigration to Britain. Detractors of Brexit had claimed the UK would suffer from the mass exodus of professionals towards the European Union, with Frankfurt and Paris tipped to surpass London in attractiveness.

She said: "We have finally ended free movement, delivered our new points-based immigration system...

"Welcoming people to our country based on the skills they have to offer, not the colour of their passport."

Ms Patel claimed: "Our new routes are attracting the best and brightest talent from around the world...

"Welcoming brilliant scientists, the finest academics, and leading people in their fields…

And in in emphatic statement, she slammed "At long last, the British immigration system is under the control of the British Government."

But the Home Secretary warned how "despite what we have already delivered" Britain "must be honest with ourselves about the long-standing problems we still face".

She said: "We owe it to our country to continue confronting difficult issues, no matter how controversial, or complex.

Ms Patel stated how all states have a responsibility to control their borders but added "for where there is a door, there must be a door keeper".

The Home Secretary went on to talk tough on the migrant crisis as she turned the crosshairs onto French President Emmanuel Macron following months of the escalating crisis in the English Channel.

She continued, vowing to take firm action to remove migrants crossing the Channel as she said there was "no reason why any asylum seeker should come to the United Kingdom directly from France".

Last month saw a record number of migrants cross the Channel with over 4,000 people making the treacherous journey.

More than 17,000 have made the journey so far in 2021, more than double the total for the whole of 2020 with three months of the year still to go.

The UK has agreed it will pay £54million to France to help Paris stop attempts to cross the Dover Strait.
