KUWAIT CITY, Dec 18: The Ministry of Interior denies issuing any circular to any of its departments to stop the renewal of driving licenses of expatriates or ban replacing lost documents, reports Al- Qabas daily. To the contrary the ministry blamed the media for ‘blowing the issue out of context’ and accusing the media of printing ‘incorrect’ material. The ministry said in a statement what happened was nothing but a routine procedure carried out by the General Department of Information Systems in coordination with the General Traffic Department to redevelop the system, update the data and run a check on all driving licenses issued after the Ministerial Resolution No.270/2020 was issued to ensure the recipients meet the conditions when replacing old with smart driving licenses.

       Illegally

As for those who are proven to have obtained a driver’s license illegally or through fraudulent methods, they licenses will be withdrawn and legal measures taken against them. However, earlier it was reported by Al-Qabas daily that MP Abdullah Al- Tariji quoting the Minister of Interior Sheikh Thamer Al-Ali said the decision to withdraw the driving licenses of expatriates, which had opened the doors of controversy, had been cancelled. The controversial ‘verbal’ decision revealed the extent of chaos the Interior Ministry was experiencing since it was not officially issued, nor was it announced by the Security Media Department concerned with publishing the ministry’s news and decisions, but it spread widely on the communication platforms, and the latest state of confusion in view of the economic harm the decision can cause to different sectors of the country.

       Withdraw

MP Abdullah Al-Tariji, in a statement described the decision to withdraw expatriate drivers’ licenses as ‘random’, ‘ill-thought-out’ and ‘demonstrates mismanagement’. Informed sources revealed to Al-Qabas that the announcement of the expected government formation will take place next week, and suggested at the same time that the Minister of Interior ‘will not return’ after this chaos and failure. The issue of expatriate licenses was not the first of its kind as an “example of confusion and randomness”, as it seemed recently that the Ministry of the Interior had put itself in a quarry, away from the pulse of the street, leaving the circulating news about this file and others, and accordingly others transmit decisions that are at the heart of the institution’s work security, without the ministry bothering itself to confirm or deny or even clarify its position.
