PETALING JAYA: The Cabinet has agreed and committed to parliamentary and government administration reforms and offered to table several proposals in Parliament, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The proposals include limiting the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years, an anti-hopping law and amendments to relevant laws to make Undi18 a reality.
Others are ensuring balanced membership between government and Opposition lawmakers in parliamentary select committees, and that all Bills, including the Supply Bill, will be discussed and agreed upon collectively.
Opposition members will be involved in the National Recovery Council and the Opposition Leader will be given perks and facilities on par with a minister.
“The proposals are meant to create a new political landscape by implementing transformation and renewal in government administration, especially to strengthen the parliamentary institution.“This is also aimed at bringing back political stability so that Covid-19 can be tackled and the economy can recover,” the Prime Minister said in a statement following a Cabinet meeting yesterday. On limiting the tenure of the prime minister, Ismail Sabri said an amendment to the Federal Constitution would be proposed.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had earlier this week said that while the Election Commission would proceed with implementing Undi18, which lowers the voting age to 18, some relevant laws would still need to be amended.
Ismail Sabri said the proposed reforms were in line with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s decree on the importance of a stable administration to address an unprecedented situation involving multiple crises.
