Sheet piles to prop up landslide area for now

KUALA LUMPUR: Sheet piles measuring 12m high are being installed by the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) as an immediate measure following a landslide at Lestari Perdana in Seri Kembangan here.

“The sheet piles will be installed along a 150m length and work is expected to be completed within a week. However, this is only a temporary measure as they can only last a maximum of three months,” said Subang Jaya deputy mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali.

“A permanent wall will be built, depending on the site’s condition and possible risks. The estimated cost is RM4mil to RM5mil,” he said when chairing MBSJ’s full board hybrid meeting yesterday.

He said the incident on Tuesday was due to the collapse of a drain bank in Jalan LP1A/1.

“A contractor checked the landslide at about 1am on Wednesday and started installing the sheet piles. This is to strengthen the drain and road structure, and to prevent further collapse or cracks,” he said.

He added that Tuesday’s landslide likely occurred due to underground water movement.

He said it was unrelated to another landslide that happened nearby four years ago due to water runoff from a sewerage system.

“A report on the incident will be submitted to the state government and Selangor Mentri Besar.

“We will also apply for funding for the repairs from the state government, or alternatively contra the cost against the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris) allocation,” he said.

MBSJ said in a statement that it was identifying the cause of the collapsed drain bank.

“The council will soon hold a comprehensive discussion and study with the relevant agencies, including with Kumpulan Ikram Engineering Services Sdn Bhd.

“The comprehensive repair work is expected to be completed within three months,” said the statement.

MBSJ urged the public to remain cautious and report any complaints through the Aduan Awam MBSJ app or by calling MBSJ’s Command Centre at 03-8024 7700.
