PETALING JAYA: The government has started planning towards separating the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor to uphold the rule of law, says Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and law) said the Federal Government is always open and ready to take measures to preserve public integrity and trust in the legislature including the Attorney General's Chambers.
“For now, to ensure the aspect of justice and fulfilment of the principle of the rule of law as well as to avoid conflict of interest, the government has started plans to separate the roles between the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor.
“This will be improved through comparative studies with other countries while considering the suitability of the country’s legal system,” he said in a statement on Friday (July 23).
Takiyuddin added that the government has no objection in considering the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) should it be needed.
“The need to set up a RCI should be based on facts, laws as well as measures by certain parties that may raise questions of integrity and confidence against the legislature, which is supposed to act as adviser to the government in legal aspects as well as gatekeeper of criminal justice,” he said.
