GEORGE TOWN: Large gatherings and events at public spaces where it is difficult to control physical distancing during New Year’s Eve are prohibited, say police.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong however said minor-scale celebrations and conducted in closed-door premises are allowed.

He said nightclubs and entertainment outlets are also not allowed to operate.

He warned that operators who had converted their licences to restaurants must ensure that their businesses are being carried out in accordance with their licences.

"We will take action against those found conducting their businesses with entertainment elements in their restaurants,” he said at a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters on Thursday (Dec 30).

He said it was also illegal to sell, own and play with fireworks and firecrackers during New Year’s Eve, and those found to breach the rules will be punished.

He said so far, no permit has been issued to anyone to light fireworks on New Year’s Eve in George Town.

ACP Soffian advised the public to always comply with the instructions from the police on duty to ensure the safety and public order in the state.

Meanwhile, police will mobilise its officers and personnel to ensure the public adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOP) during Phase Four of National Recovery Plan (NRP) on New Year's Eve.

ACP Soffian Santong said some 146 officers and 821 personnel from the state police contingent will be deployed in the integrated operation to ensure public order.

"The integrated operation will involve all departments in the state police contingent and other agencies such as the Penang Island City Council, Seberang City Council, and state Health Department," he said.

ACP Soffian said the integrated operation will involve roadblocks, crime prevention ops, SOP compliance monitoring and traffic control.

Speaking on behalf of state police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, ACP Soffian said during the integrated operation, police will ensure smooth traffic flow in the state by deploying personnel at several tourist hotspots.

ACP Soffian said based on past festivities, state police expected there will be an increase of vehicles travelling in and out of the state on Friday (Dec 31) and the weekend.

He said police will work with PLUS on Friday to get more details.

"I would like to advise motorists to always comply with traffic rules and please don't park your vehicles at the side of the road that can cause problems to other vehicles and subsequently cause traffic jams," he said.
