KEPALA BATAS: Police are looking for two women allegedly seen stealing ornamental or costume jewellery from a shop at a hypermarket in Bertam here on Monday (June 21).

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the 39-year-old shopowner was looking at CCTV footage of his jewellery shop and saw the suspects taking a box containing rings and bracelets from a covered display rack outside.

"The 30-second video clip taken from the shop's CCTV shows the two suspects taking items placed on an exterior display rack under a blue cloth," ACP Noorzainy said in a statement on Friday (June 25).

He added that the suspects, both wearing face masks, were seen in the CCTV footage wandering around the storefront before committing the theft.

He said the owner, who lives in Kulim, has been running his business at the hypermarket for two years but his shop has been closed since June 1 due to the lockdown.

"Police are investigating," he said, adding that the owner estimated his losses at about RM2,000.

The 30-second video clip of the incident has been making the rounds on social media and WhatsApp.

The case has been classified under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft within a premises used as a dwelling or for the custody of property.
