SUNGAI BULOH: Bukit Aman will use patrol car mounted radars and the vehicle registration plate scanning device (iCOPS) systems to detect traffic offenders during Ops Selamat held in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Razarudin Husain said that with both systems installed in expressway mobile patrol vehicles, police will be able to detect speeding as well as identify whether an individual has outstanding compounds or traffic arrest warrants.“We are conducting enforcement digitally by using the in-car radar along highways to ensure that all motorists abide by the speed limit.

“For iCOPS, the system will be able to detect traffic offenders with outstanding summonses, traffic arrest warrants, as well as vehicles used in crimes,” he said in his speech before launching the 17th Ops Selamat here yesterday, with this latest edition to be held from Jan 28 to Feb 6.

“Our main objective is preventing house break-ins and minimising road accidents during the Chinese New Year celebration.

“Police nationwide will be deployed for crime prevention rounds, operations and scheduled monitoring through the festivities,” he said, while urging the public to take the necessary precautions before leaving their homes. We also urge the public to inform the police before going back to their hometowns.

“The forms can be obtained at the nearest police station or downloaded from the police website, as well as by calling 999 hotline or by applying through the Volunteer Smart Patrol app,” he said.

Meanwhile, PLUS Malaysia Bhd expects the number of vehicles on PLUS Highways to significantly increase to 1.6 million for the four days over Chinese New Year.
