CHRISTMAS market tourists have been left fuming at a hidden fee at one of the UK's most popular festive hotspots.

Manchester Christmas market runs from November 2 to December 24 every year and is the largest German Christmas market outside of Germany.

This means tourists can enjoy classics such as schnitzels, bratwursts and steins of beer.

It's well known that food and drink is pricey at festive markets, but there are also hidden charges Christmas fans should be wary of.

Shocked tourists have shared online how you could be left even further out of pocket at the popular festive haunt.

Manchester Christmas market operates a "cup deposit scheme" which sees you pay extra for a proper holder for your beverage.

It means that prices for drinks may seem even more over-inflated than usual.

Some stalls will let you keep the fancy mug a hot chocolate or mulled wine arrives in.

But if you don't fancy taking home the mug, you need to know that you can get £3.50 back.

Punters will see this returned in change, even if you paid for the drink by card.

This little known rule means customers could end up paying the full fee and be charged for the mug.

Some bemoaned the hidden payment on X, formerly Twitter, with one slamming the market for "acting like a Portuguese holiday resort".

They wrote: "Was in Manchester christmas market a few weeks back.

"Fiver each for mulled wines, which is pretty standard, but then there was a £3.50 deposit fee for each cup - acting like a Portuguese holiday resort."

One user commented on Facebook that they paid £29 for two drinks but got a whopping £9 back when they "returned the glasses".

At another Prosecco bar, drinks come served in a glass that read 'Manchester Christmas markets'.

Without knowing, you may just assume that you could leave the cup on the table and someone would come and collect it for you.

But this is not the case, so make sure you return your glass to receive your hard-earned money back.

It comes as famished Christmas market-goers in Manchester were left livid after being charged 12 times more for a sausage roll than at Greggs.

The hog roast roll costs a wallet-burning £15 at the "rip off" attraction - but the much-loved bakery chain asks just £1.20.

Loaded fries cost £12, a sandwich £9 and a small glass of mulled wine £5.50 at the festive venue.

Other sky-high prices include a £13.50 chicken waffle and a bagel for £9.50 at the markets which extend across Cathedral Gardens and Piccadilly Gardens.
