Vet issues urgent warning to dog owners about mistake that can be 'deadly'

Pet owners are always keen to ensure the safety of their dogs.

However, a vet has emphasised the importance of being well-informed about one particular aspect of dog safety. Lack of knowledge in this area could prove extremely dangerous for your pet, potentially leaving them with just hours to live in severe cases.

Amir Anwary, known as Amir the Vet on TikTok, highlighted what to do if your dog encounters poison and you can't immediately reach a vet. If ingested, immediate action is crucial.

In an informative video, he explained: "The first two hours are absolutely integral because that's the amount of time it takes for the poison to move past the stomach into the intestines - at which point it can be absorbed, and then you are fighting an uphill battle.

"So you want to get your dog to vomit out that poison as soon as possible, and there are a couple of ways to do this at home. Firstly guys, you don't want to make them vomit if they've eaten anything caustic or sharp, because this can potentially cause more damage coming back up, so be careful not to make them vomit if they've eaten any of these things.

"The best way to make them vomit is by making a hydrogen peroxide solution, specifically a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Not more concentrated than that, and you're going to use about one teaspoon per five pounds of body weight."

He added: "Inject that orally and wait 10 to 15 minutes for them to vomit. If they don't vomit you can repeat that process again. But, if it doesn't work after that, I recommend getting to a vet as soon as possible."

Amir also remarked that while some suggest using washing powder in the absence of hydrogen peroxide, he advises against it due to potential further harm. Emphasising the necessity of having hydrogen peroxide on hand, he stated it is an essential item in every pet owner's "emergency kit".

Post-vomiting attempts, the vet underlined the importance of administering activated charcoal to the dog, which is vital regardless of whether the dog has vomited or not, as it helps to bind toxins and prevent absorption.

According to the vet, following these protocols could be lifesaving. The instructional video has since gone viral, garnering thousands of views, with people asking all sorts of questions.

       What you need to know

It is crucial to remember that when a dog ingests something harmful, inducing vomiting should only occur under professional instruction. Always consult with a vet first and, if immediate veterinary assistance isn't available, reaching out to an emergency vet service or a pet poison control helpline for advice is imperative before trying any home remedies.

Certain items that dogs ingest, such as batteries, caustic substances and sharp objects, can prove fatal if regurgitated. Swallowed objects can cause blockages or perforations, making induced vomiting a risky procedure.

One of the risks is aspiration pneumonia, which occurs when substances, usually stomach contents, are inhaled into the lungs. It's particularly dangerous to induce vomiting in brachycephalic breeds like Pugs or Pekingese due to the risk of causing aspiration pneumonia.

Therefore, professional advice should always be sought before attempting this. Some experts recommend using a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to induce vomiting in dogs when necessary.

This is why it's advisable to keep a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in your dog's first aid kit for emergencies away from home. When using this method, vomiting can continue for up to 45 minutes, so it's crucial to ensure your dog is in a comfortable environment.

However, you should not induce vomiting in your dog if they exhibit any of the following symptoms or conditions:
