Following the Southport attack, which also saw several others injured, misinformation was rife across social media, with false speculation surrounding the attacker's migration status and religion.
The media was unable to disclose any information about 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana until the judge on the case lifted reporting restrictions.
One of those to speculate in the wake of the attack was Nigel Farage, who in a video posted to X said: “I just wonder whether the truth is being withheld from us. Something is going horribly wrong in our once beautiful country.”

He also questioned why the attack was being treated as a "non-terror incident".

Later, speaking on LBC, the Reform UK leader said: “What happened in Southport would not have been of the same magnitude had the truth been told and told very, very quickly,”
Other big figures on social media such as Tommy Robinson and Andrew Tate have also been accused of spreading misinformation, and unrest both online and on Britain's streets has grown.
Mr Farage has since condemned the violence, saying he was "totally appalled" and has also slammed politicians for dubbing the riots "Farage riots".
He said: "People like Andy McDonald from the Labour Party, Anna Soubry, former Conservative Party MP, broadcasters like James O'Brien on LBC are calling these 'Farage's riots'.
"People are saying I've been orchestrating, organising, encouraging the riots. Nothing could be further from the truth."

Speaking to Mike Graham on TalkTV today, Mr Farage responded to the accusations he was to blame for inciting riots.
He said: "Some of what has been said is absolutely disgusting. It's cowardly, it is unjust. I've been fighting elections for 30 years because I believe in the democratic process. I've never in any point in those 30 years been involved in violence, been involved in street protest, been involved in encouraging any of these things."

He went on to blame the lack of information after the incident for the unrest saying: "One of the reasons the Southport riots were as bad as they were, one of the reasons the mosque itself was targeted is because the authorities didn't tell us quickly enough what the truth was."
Mr Farage also added his question "as to whether he was on a watchlist still hasn't been answered".
