JOHOR BARU: The reconstruction of the Yong Peng market which was burnt two years ago is now 60% complete, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

       The Ayer Hitam MP said that Yong Peng district council president Nur Faiz Jamil briefed him on the progress during a discussion about issues faced by locals.

       "The reconstruction of the market, which burnt down on March 31, 2022, will take another three months," he said in a Facebook post on Sunday (Jan 14).

       Dr Wee said Yong Peng assemblyman Ling Tian Soon and Yong Peng district officers also attended the discussion.

       He said the project was approved by the Federal Government with an allocation of RM1.2mil to replace the razed market, adding that another RM300,000 was allocated to upgrade stalls in front of the market.

       Dr Wee said he also discussed the construction of the Yong Peng Mini Stadium with Ling, which has long been delayed even though the land has been allocated.

       A fire that occurred at 2.30am on March 31,2022, destroyed at least 70% of the market. There were no casualties.

       In an immediate response, Dr Wee instructed Ling to hand out financial aid of RM1,000 to each trader affected by the fire.
