JOHOR BARU: A distraught daughter is pleading with her father to return home and settle his debt with a licensed moneylending firm, which she alleges has been harassing her family for the last 10 months.

       The 31-year-old woman, who wanted to be known only as Ng, said her 55-year-old father left their home at Indahpura in Kulai in December, before the harassment started.

       “The problem started on Dec 12 when I was working as a nurse at a clinic. My younger brother called me to say three men were making noise in front of our house.

       “I went back home to see what the problem was. The men accused my father of borrowing RM50,000 from the company they worked for, and told me to settle his debt,” she told a virtual press conference organised by MCA National Public Complaints and Service Bureau deputy chief Chua Jian Boon here on Monday (Sept 20).

       She added that when she asked for documents to show that her father really did borrow money from them, the men refused and told her that as a daughter she should pay his debt.

       “I refused to pay because we were not the borrowers. Since then, they have been harassing us by putting up banners outside our house and using loudspeakers to announce our debt on a daily basis,” she said.

       Ng added that the family tried to ask her father about the loan but he refused to confirm borrowing the money.

       “My father does not want to come clean with us and we do not know if he really borrowed the RM50,000, or what he did with it.

       “He just told us not to answer if the moneylenders come to our house again, but the harassment has continued to this day,” she added.

       She said the constant disturbance and fear that the men would show up at their door again left her unable to focus on her duties as a nurse.

       She pleaded with the company to stop disturbing her family as they were not the ones who took out the loan in the first place.

       “I know that my father is still living somewhere in Johor but we do not know his exact location,” she said.

       Chua urged the company to stop harassing the family, which has been living under tremendous pressure.

       “It is not right for the company to force the family to pay a debt that her father incurred, as they did not provide any documents to support their claim.

       “Furthermore, none of the family members signed any documents to become a guarantor to the loan," he added.
