Sunday Times chief political commentator Tim Shipman, who is renowned for having sources in the Tory hierarchy took to the social network X in the wake of the Labour Party’s landslide to offer an update on what insiders were saying.
“There’s a weird delirium seizing Tories this morning,” he wrote. “Worst election result ever but they can sniff an opening with [Kier] Starmer’s low vote share.”
Despite achieving a 211-seat majority, the Labour Party is barely 2 percentage points better off in terms of the overall number of votes it won nationally to what Jeremy Corbyn achieved five years ago when he was resoundingly defeated by Boris Johnson.

However, the Sunday Times journalist warned that if this interpretation was widespread: "It may change who they pick for leader.”
The remarkable national vote share results have provided a very different picture to the overwhelming electoral victory celebrated by the Labour Party.
An Express analysis of what Parliament would look like if the number of votes cast equated to seats in the House of Commons shows Kier Starmer’s Party would have around half the representatives it achieved.
