Floods: Over 3,400 evacuees still seeking shelter at Johor relief centres

       JOHOR BARU: One flood relief centre has closed in Segamat while 46 others are still operating statewide.

       Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman R. Vidyananthan said the SMK Dato Bentara Dalam flood relief centre, which housed evacuees from Kampung Sedeng in Segamat, closed on Sunday (Jan 9) morning.

       “Since 8am on Sunday, 273 flood victims have returned home, bringing the total number of evacuees currently putting up at flood relief centres to 3,441 as of 4pm.

       “The other operating flood relief centres are 25 in Segamat, 10 in Muar, nine in Tangkak and two in Batu Pahat.

       “The flood relief centre sheltering the highest number of evacuees is in SMK Sultan Alauddin with 266 people from 81 families,” he said, adding that the evacuees are from Liang Batu, Muar.

       He said according to the Johor Disaster Management Committee, cloudy skies were reported in Segamat, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru as of 4pm Sunday (Jan 9).

       He added that Sungai Muar along Liang Batu in Muar has also entered the red zone, which is dangerous for sea levels.

       Other locations along Sungai Muar in Buloh Kasap (Segamat); Kampung Olak Sepam, Panchor and Bukit Kepong (Muar) are also still in the red zone.
