       THE Kanni Amman shrine in Negri Sembilan which was mistakenly built on a piece of land allocated for a mosque will be relocated, Makkal Osai reported.

       Repah assemblyman Veerapan Subramaniam said the 60-year-old Murugan temple in the former Chinna estate was given an alternate piece of land because of redevelopment.

       Three years ago, the temple committee built the Kanni Amman shrine on the piece of land not realising it had been allocated to the Islamic Affairs Department in 2012.

       Following a discussion with the district land office and state executive councillor Arul Kumar Jambunathan, the temple committee agreed to rectify the mistake and relocate the shrine, Veerapan said.

       The matter has been amicably resolved and should not be turned into a controversy to confuse the public, the assemblyman urged.

       Action team coordinator and MIC central working committee member K. Sathasivam said the cemetery on Jalan Kolam Air is the only one in the area serving the Hindu community.

       There are more than 600 remains interred at the 1.4ha cemetery since it was gazetted in the 1960s.

       The small parking area in front of the cemetery can only cater to about 20 to 25 cars, which already causes congestion during religious festivals and special prayer events when families visit the graves to pay their respects.

       Sathasivam said the decision by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council to convert the area into a recycling centre is shocking and inhumane.

       He said the council must immediately stop the construction work, which has already started despite the objections.

       Complaints made to the police, the council and the Malaysia Hindu Sangam have yielded no results so far, he added.

       Sathasivam said an idea to put up a small hut on the open land in front of the cemetery to facilitate funeral rites during a downpour also had to be abandoned because of the construction work.

       He urged officials and political leaders to intervene in the matter urgently without turning it into a political issue.
