JOHOR BARU: A 14-year-old boy and eight other people were hauled up by the police for various traffic offences, such as performing dangerous stunts on the road.
State traffic investigation and enforcement chief Supt M. Kumarasan said the individuals were arrested under “Ops Samseng Jalanan” carried out in multiple locations here on Saturday (April 9).
He said a 425-strong team of officers and personnel were involved in the operation to combat the activities where offenders gather with their modified motorcycles and perform dangerous stunts like ‘wheelie’ and ‘superman’ on the road and share footage of it on social media.
“Their activities also involve illegal racing, which endangers not only themselves but the safety of other road users too,” he said, adding that they had received complaints on the matter.
He said the nine suspects are aged from 14 to 29 and were arrested under the Road Transport Act 1987.
He also said a total of 515 traffic summonses were issued following checks on 2,756 individuals and 1,950 vehicles, including 1,006 motorcycles.
“We also seized 105 vehicles for various traffic offences under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“This operation will be a continuous effort against the mat rempit culture and other bad road habits,” he said.
