       PENANG Deputy Chief Minister Prof Dr P. Ramasamy has welcomed the decision to allow SJK (T) Jalan Sungai to be renamed after Swami Ramadasar, reported Makkal Osai.

       He said it would be very appropriate to name the school after Ramadasar who taught and promoted Tamil education, literature, poetry and arts in the state.

       Ramasamy said when he was approached with the idea, he lent full support and helped with the process.

       Ramadasar, who is said to have mastered 57 of the 64 art forms or wisdom in the Tamil tradition, helped nurture many Tamil poets and writers in Penang.

       The idea to rename the school after him was mooted by a team led by local poet P.K. Narayanan, writers M. Tamizhanban and Kovathan, former Tamil school headmasters M. Ambigapathi, P. Suppiah and K. Sivanesan, Prof Dr D. Ravichandran and Technic Ganesan.

       Narayanan said the renaming of the school after the swami had also received the support of his family.

       The team and the community in the state are grateful that the proposed name change was approved, making it an honour for the school and Tamil community, he said.

       Local poet VM Sethuraman had also organised the 100-year anniversary celebration of Ramadasar in Penang.

       > A worker at a heavy machinery workshop in Perak was killed in a freak accident when the tyre of a mobile crane he was inflating burst suddenly, reported Makkal Osai.

       Kumaresan Katthamutthu, 60, was working in the Menglembu workshop on Tuesday when the incident occurred at about 10am.

       The burst tyre caused the rim to break apart and hit him on the head. He died at the scene.

       His body was sent to Hospital Ipoh for a post-mortem.
