A popular Spanish resort loved by Brits is tackling overtourism with new laws forcing popular attractions to close early.

Alicante has imposed new noise regulations in two areas, forcing bars, restaurants, and nightclubs to comply with new opening hours.

The Olive Press reports that one zone covers parts of the Old Town and the other encompasses the Centre around Calle Cstanos.

These new Acoustically Saturated Zones (ZAS) require nightclubs to close at 3am on Fridays and Saturdays, and 1am the rest of the week.

Bars and restaurants must close by 1am on Fridays and Saturdays and 12:30am the rest of the week. This could come into force as soon as late March.

Terraces will also be affected, with half the number being slashed and forced to be cleared 30 minutes before the establishment closes.

The move by Alicante City Council comes following noise complaints from residents.

The council said local police will enforce the new closing times and terrace rules, which could involve dispersing crowds.

Shops open 24 hours a day will also have to close between 12:30-7am.

Shops selling baked goods, newspapers, drinks, and takeaways will also be impacted.

However, there will still be some exceptions, such as Christmas, New Year, and the Three Kings holiday.

The council will decide on appropriate opening hours for these days nearer the time.
