Diana bought Princess Anne a beautiful cashmere sweater unaware of the tradition of avoiding expensive gifts and buying humorous ones.In return Anne bought her a loo roll holder.

       However, the following Christmas Diana embraced the tradition by buying her sister-in-law Fergie a leopard print bath mat.

       According to Royal sources this tradition of eccentric Royal Christmas gifts continues with Megan Markle buying the Queen a singing toy hamster during her first Royal Christmas.

       The source said, “It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy.”

       Prince Anne brought her brother Charles a white leather toilet seat which he supposedly takes with him on foreign tours.

       Some of the gifts have been risqué over the years, reflecting the mischievous side of members of the Royal Family.

       Prince Harry reportedly bought the Queen a bath hat that had 'ain't life a b*tch' written on it.

       Kate Middleton once brought Harry a 'grow your own girlfriend' kit after the Prince had hit the headlines following a string of high profile romances prior to his relationship with Megan Markle.

       However, unlike most British families the Royals actually open their presents on Christmas Eve reflecting their Germanic heritage.

       They secretly sneak their presents downstairs during the afternoon before coming together for the evening.

       At 6pm every family member’s gifts are cornered off into a pile before they open them.

       Prince Philip was in charge of this process giving each Royal to go ahead to open their gifts.

       After the death of the Duke in April somebody else will have to take this responsibility but it’s not clear who.
