SEREMBAN: The state National Parks and Wildlife Department (Perhilitan) has captured a 40kg sun bear after it entered its trap near here.

       Negri Sembilan Perhilitan director Wan Mat Wan Harun said the trap was set up in Kampung Jimah Lama since June 18 following complaints from villagers that a sun bear had been sighted there on June 12.

       “Seven personnel went to inspect the trap as soon as we received information it had entered the trap at 7.15pm (on Tuesday).

       “The bear could have strayed into the village in light of the durian season. The smell of durians from the village could have lured the bear to leave its normal habitat,” he said.

       Wan Mat added that the bear was in healthy condition.

       He said the department’s veterinary officer examined the bear before it was released into a wildlife protection forest reserve area in the state to ensure the species was looked after. — Bernama
