The Prime Minister was questioned by a US Senator about the Royal Family during his ongoing visit to the US. While the question itself has not been confirmed, Mr Johnson's response was picked up on by reporters.

On Wednesday afternoon ITV royal correspondent Chris Ship tweeted: "Boris Johnson to a US senator when asked about the Royal Family: 'On your question about the royal family, I get a free pass on that one, I have a total get out of jail free card as Prime Minister, I never say anything about the royal family.'"

Mr Ship added: "It's not clear what the question was!"

This is not the first time that Boris Johnson has refused to comment on matters relating to the Royal Family.

Mr Johnson was asked a number of times about Meghan and Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey in the days that followed in March 2021.

However, the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson refused to comment every time.

The No10 official said: "I've got nothing to add to what the Prime minister said during the press conference yesterday.

In a coronavirus briefing following this interview, the Prime Minister then said: “I have spent a long time now not commenting on Royal Family matters and I don't intend to depart from that today.

“I really think that when it comes to matters to do with the Royal Family, the right thing for prime ministers to say is nothing - and nothing is the thing that I propose to say today about that particular matter.

Mr Johnson is currently in the USA in an attempt to agree a trade deal between the US and the UK.

Mr Johnson has said that the trip to the US is to allow for “solid incremental steps” towards a mutual trade deal between the US and UK.

Boris Johnson spoke to reporters on Tuesday at the US Capitol building following discussions with Joe Biden.

Mr Johnson said: “What we’re wanting to do is make solid incremental steps in trade.

“The Biden administration is not doing free trade deals around the world right now but I’ve got absolutely every confidence that a great deal is there to be done.

“And there are plenty of people in that building behind me who certainly want a deal.”

Mr Johnson did announce that there would be a resumption in UK lamb exports as he said: “I can tell you today that what we’re going to get from the United States now is a lifting of the decades-old ban, totally unjustified, discriminating on British farmers and British lamb.

       “It’s about time too.”
