The Princess Royal, 71, was in Paris, France from Sunday to Monday, and has planted the first overseas Jubilee Tree as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy. Anne also met with laureates of the UNESCO/L’Oreal Women in Science programme as well as senior representatives of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Anne planted the Jubilee tree in the?garden?of the Residence of the British Ambassador?to France.

The gesture marks Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, and will be repeated in British Embassies and High Commissions, British Overseas Territories, and Crown Dependencies.

The tree in the garden of the British Ambassador’s residence in France is the first tree to be planted in a British Embassy for The Queen's Green Canopy.

However, the French President was not present at the ceremony.

British Ambassador to France Menna Rawlings said she was “delighted” to welcome the Princess Royal.

She added: “I am delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to Paris for an exciting programme that reflects HRH’s interests as well as the UK and France’s shared values and engagement on the world stage.

“From promoting sustainability to celebrating women at the cutting edge of science, to looking forward to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is a huge honour to host this visit and share with HRH what it means to be such close ‘voisins’.”

Anne's visit has been described as marking the strength of an "indelible friendship" between France and Britain.

The official account of the British Embassy in France tweeted: "The royal flag symbolises the arrival of the Royal Family in France.

"It also marks the strength of an indelible friendship between our two countries.

"With this official trip desired by HRH The Princess Royal, the first since the start of the pandemic."

The royal’s French visit marks the first time a member of the Royal Family other than Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, have been abroad since the coronavirus pandemic.

In October 2020, the heir to the throne travelled to Kuwait alone to offer his and the Queen's condolences to the country following the death of Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

One month later, Prince Charles was joined by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, for a poignant visit to Germany, during which they attended Berlin’s Central Remembrance Ceremony.

In March 2021, the couple visited Athens to mark the Bicentenary Independence Day celebrations of Greece.

Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, were the last members of the royal family to carry out an official visit to Paris in March 2017.

They attended the RBS 6 Nations match between France and Wales and dazzled at an evening banquet.

The Cambridge royals also visited France for James Middleton’s wedding.
