The Monarch read out ministers’ plans for Parliament under Sir Keir Starmer which included energy, transport and security.
Shadow environment secretary Steve Barclay said: “This Labour government’s first King’s Speech has confirmed that they are already ignoring rural communities.
“Having had just 87 words on farming in their manifesto, there is nothing for farming or fishing in their plans announced today.”

Former energy minister Graham Stuart MP intervened during Sir Keir’s speech in the Commons to warn that people in rural communities are “afraid” of Labour.

He said: “People in rural communities around the country see the vast majority that [Sir Keir] has assembled and they’re afraid. They see a manifesto in which just 87 words are used about farming.
“They see a King’s speech with no mention of rural communities or rural priorities.”
Mr Stuart asked for reassurances that Sir Keir’s Labour Government would take notice of rural communities.
In response, Sir Keir said: “Let me take this opportunity to reassure those in rural communities. I grew up in a rural community myself and I think that if you loop up in the places that are now represented on these benches, you’ll see the reassurances that have been given and will also be given again.”
And Tory MP Ben Obese-Jecty claimed Labour had shown a disregard for the concerns of rural communities.
He said: “Very disappointing to see our rural communities ignored in Labour’s first King’s Speech.
“Labour are clearly prepared to ride roughshod over rural communities’ wishes, as they’ve already shown elsewhere in Cambridgeshire with their approval of the Sunnica solar farm.”
The King’s Speech had several measures to help tackle the climate crisis but lacked detail on crucial issues facing farmers and food production, the CEO of the Nature Friendly Farming Network (NFFN) said.

NFFFN’s boss Martin Lines added: “Most concerningly, the new Government has not set out any specific policies on nature’s restoration, when nature needs to be at the heart of its plans for green growth and a healthy nation.
“Our farming landscape can deliver the right outcomes for climate, nature and food security, but only if farmers are given the right levels of support.
“The farming sector urgently needs to see a strategic land use strategy from the Government and a detailed, ambitious plan for the agricultural transition to more nature-friendly food production techniques. When farms are already on the front line of the climate crisis, with the winter weather wreaking havoc with crop growth, there is very little time to lose.”
Responding to today’s King’s Speech, NFU President Tom Bradshaw said: “I am pleased to say we have heard this new government repeatedly state that food security is critical for national security.
“Now that it has set out its legislative activity for this session of Parliament, we need to see a plan for food production which backs this up. With farmer confidence at an all-time low, investment in food and farming via an increased multi-annual agriculture budget is key to unlocking growth and future prosperity.
“A number of Bills included in today’s King’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament will be significant for British farm businesses, not least those relating to planning reform and infrastructure, crime and policing, mental health, skills and new technologies and renewable energy opportunities through the creation of GB Energy.
“Our farmers and growers are ambitious for the future, and with new policies that revitalise farm business confidence, government can help to kickstart economic growth, deliver affordable, climate-friendly, high welfare food production, improve the environment, and stimulate clean energy supply.
“We look forward to working in partnership with this new government to help shape the legislation that will deliver this change.”
