UK weather – Sand dunes on FIRE as Brits bake in 24C heatwave… and more to come

SUN-starved Brits are basking in 24C sunshine today - with some areas so hot sand dunes have caught FIRE in the warm weather.

Beaches and parks are packed full of people enjoying the heatwave as summer finally returns after weeks of torrential rain and downpours.

Brits in the south are enjoying highs of 24C today, with the weather feeling a "little more summery" after weeks of torrential rain.

The best of the conditions this afternoon are in South East England, which has borne the brunt of the August washout.

The Met Office said: "It's feeling a little more summery this afternoon in parts of southern and eastern England, however further north and west we've got more cloud and a band of rain.

"Today's rain is associated with an area of low pressure which will bring a windy day to northwestern areas tomorrow."

People basked in the sunshine while sitting along the River Thames watching the Henley Royal Regatta today.

And families flocked to Bournemouth beach to make the most of the summer holidays.

Meanwhile, in Wales, aerial footage shows a shocking sand dune grass fire throwing up smoke after the recent hot weather.

MIDWEEK MELTDOWN

The footage was captured on sand dunes near Borth and threatened the nearby Ynyslas Golf Course.

Fire crews were called and arrived at the scene to tackle the blaze on the dunes at around 3pm yesterday.

It is unclear what caused the unexpected blaze but the fire comes after the UK experienced an extreme heatwave.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said there was an East/West split in the weather today, with the East enjoying sunnier weather.

He said: "It will turn damp over parts of North West England, West Wales and finally into parts of South West England too come the end of the afternoon.

"Northern Ireland actually brightens up through the afternoon.

RISING TEMPERATURES

'Western coast of Scotland also cheering up a little through the afternoon.

"And the rain in eastern Scotland will be fairly patchy. Further south though, and further east, it's staying largely dry. It will cloud over somewhat.

"But parts of East Anglia and the South East may well hang onto some good spells of sunshine, and in this zone that's where we'll see the top temperatures more widely into the mid-20s, perhaps 25C is possible.

"Obviously it's going to feel cooler where we've got the cloud and the rain and the increasing rain further west."

Meanwhile in Europe, an Alicante resort has been hit by a freak "mini-tsunami" caused by a blowtorch Saharan heat surge that is forecast to send temperatures in Spain rocketing to 47C.

The bizarre rise in the tide, which was sparked by a hellish heat wave moving in from Africa, swept through the coastal town of Santa Pola last night.
