PETALING JAYA: Printing the names of passengers on ferry tickets sold online should prevent scalping, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Minister said although there is still no law to allow the Marine Department to take action against those who resell ferry tickets, he had asked the department to conduct a passenger identity check to overcome the problem.
"There may be consumers who are willing to spend more and buy tickets from resellers, but this needs to be stopped.
"Online ticket sales should benefit consumers, not the resellers who abuse this facility by raising ticket prices which will definitely affect the public," he said in a Facebook post on Friday (June 10).
Dr Wee was visiting the Kuah-Langkawi Ferry Terminal to observe passenger ferry operations from the Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah jetties.
"I reviewed the sale of ferry tickets so that the act of illegal ticket sales by resellers does not continue to spread.
"There are resellers who buy tickets online and use the reason that they 'can't make it' to sell the tickets to tourists.
"Tickets to Kuala Perlis Jetty are sold at RM18, and to Kuala Kedah Jetty at RM23, with a RM3 discount for Langkawi residents.
"However, resellers raise the price, sometimes up to RM60," he said.
