An expert has warned Keir Starmer will have to navigate a tricky relationship with the new French government, which has undergone massive change after the hard-left victory in the snap parliamentary elections this month.
Irina Tsukerman, a human rights and national security lawyer, and CEO of Scarab Rising, believes that the cabinets may have difficulties in establishing proper cooperation - both between the countries and on the wider European scene.

She told Express.co.uk: "The French-British post-election relationship is bound to get far more complicated than it was until this point. On the surface, one would think that a centre-left government in the UK and a more left-leaning government in France would mean a better relationship than previously, but it's actually not the case.
"Macron, who remains in power for now, is going to be significantly challenged by the gridlock inside France. The far-right parties came in third, but the far-left parties are now dominating over the centrists. The centrist parties have been largely wiped out, so we are seeing a far more radical element.
"So while Macron himself will retain the same positions as he has up until this point, he is going to be challenged by the makeup of the parliament."

According to Tsukerman, there will be a lot of "political infighting over every issue" in France, which will make it "very difficult for [Macron] to implement concrete measures".
This is also bound to happen with external relations, which she believes will undeniably challenge Starmer's government.
She explained: "I think we are going to see positive relations on the head-of-state level in terms of Macron and Starmer, but we are going to see that aspirations to stronger relationships are going to be very much shortened by the makeup of the French parliament and the general refocusing to this internal political infighting over projection of foreign policy on other fronts.
"That may even impact the way France is approaching the Ukraine issue."
France's party National Rally (RN) has recently been announced to lead the European Parliament's third-largest alliance, Patriots for Europe, created by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

According to Tsukerman, these far-right coalitions currently "dominating" the European Parliament are generally pro-Russia, which is likely to create tensions around aid in the Ukraine invasion.

Starmer, who has stated in the past that he wishes to work on a closer UK-EU relationship to fix the "botched" Brexit deal, may struggle aligning his interests with the far-right French party.
Tsukerman noted: "[France's] role in the European Union is also going to be interesting, given the rise of the far-right parties.
"So I think, interestingly enough, this is going to be a very polarised dynamic between France and the European Parliament and between Starmer's efforts to come closer to the European Parliament on the one hand and dealing with France on the other.”
