‘Convinced Squid Game is real!’ Children act out violent scenes at school

Teachers told concerned parents that the school children at Countesswells Primary school in Aberdeen believe the Netflix series “reflects real life.” Staff have warned parents the children are “struggling to separate fiction from reality.”

Bosses at the primary school have barred costumes inspired by the South Korean drama after pupils were seen acting out brutal scenes.

The primary school emailed parents to warn them of the trouble.

They said: “Over the course of the day, it has become apparent that many of our pupils have been watching Squid Game.”

“Some younger pupils are convinced the game is real and are finding it difficult to separate fiction from reality.”

The draw of the hit show appears to have spread to a number of schools in the UK with a report in The Mirror saying a school in Ilford, east London was forced to send a letter to parents after children were found playing a playground version of Squid Game.

Squid Game has become Netflix’s biggest show with up to 142 million households watching in its first month.

Councils in the country have issued warnings after pupils at the age of six were seen acting out games from the thriller.

Martin Greig, the Lib Dem education spokesman on Aberdeen City Council, warned parents that the “programme is not recommended for children.”

According to the Telegraph, Netflix could reel in £655million from the South Korean series.

Data seen by Bloomberg suggests over 130 million people have watched at least two minutes of the violent nine-episode show within the first 23 days of airing.

The popularity of the programme means it outstrips the raunchy period drama Bridgerton in terms of viewership.

Just over 80 million accounts streamed the regency romantic drama within 28-days of its launch.

The director Hwang has said he drew inspiration for the show based on his own economic struggles early in life as well as the class disparity in South Korea.

Squid Game was first released on Netflix on September 17.
