The most striking thing about the story of the Lynchburg, Va., school board’s refusal to accept a $10,000 grant to create a safe space in a local high school, as reported in Petula Dvorak’s Dec. 1 Metro column, “Teens won grant, but adults sent money back,” was how much more competent and compassionate the E.C. Glass High School students winning the grant were (or are) than the school board was in deciding to refuse the money based on irrational and unfounded fears about the source of the funding. There is no evidence that “grooming” makes a young person gay or transgender.

Many educational experts would suggest that learning is best — some might even say only — accomplished when the learners are willing to step outside their comfort zone into the unfamiliar and the uncomfortable. It’s tragic that this approach has become politically unacceptable to one of our two major parties.
These students are apparently better educators than the board members in charge of their education, who couldn’t truly hear what their students were telling them.
